Jayne & Paul’s Luxury Wedding at Waterton Park Hotel, Wakefield – A Romantic Yorkshire Wedding Story

WATERTON PARK HOTEL, WAKEFIELD | Wakefield Wedding Photographer | Yorkshire wedding photographer

As a luxury wedding photographer in Yorkshire, I have the privilege of working at some of the region’s most beautiful and exclusive venues — but few can match the romance and heritage of Waterton Park Hotel in Wakefield. Jayne and Paul’s elegant wedding here was a perfect example of why this lakeside estate is one of Yorkshire’s most sought-after wedding destinations.

From the historic charm of Walton Hall to the sweeping lake views and perfectly manicured grounds, Waterton Park Hotel weddings have a timeless quality that is perfect for couples seeking luxury and style. For Jayne and Paul, it was the dream setting to begin their married life together.

Planning a Luxury Wedding at Waterton Park

I first met Jayne and Paul around two months before their big day, inside the hotel’s grand reception rooms. The couple had already made most of their decisions, but as part of my bespoke pre-wedding service, we walked through every detail together. This planning session is an essential part of my luxury wedding photography experience — it allows me to understand not just the logistics, but the mood, aesthetic, and emotions my couples want me to capture.

For Jayne and Paul, this included:

  • Accessibility considerations for their guests, with exclusive use of both hotel buildings to ensure comfort for elderly and wheelchair-bound family members.
  • Their elegant colour palette that blended perfectly with the soft, neutral tones of Waterton Park’s interiors.
  • Discussing any Special requests for how and when certain moments would be photographed. Paul and Jayne had some surprises bundled into their day which only selected people were to know about in advance (ooh I love a little surprise and then capturing guest reactions)

At the end of the pre-wedding meeting, Jayne had been convinced to have flowers which originally were not part of her plans. This was through me talking about how having flowers add beauty and colour to your wedding day.

Venue Walk-Through & Photography Planning

IOne of the advantages of booking a Yorkshire wedding photographer who knows your venue is that we can plan photography locations in advance. During our venue walk-through, we explored the lakeside grounds, the stone bridge, and the grand interiors of Walton Hall.

We discussed how to make the most of the natural light for portraits, when to schedule time away from guests for intimate couple shots, and which backdrops would complement the luxurious feel they wanted.

Top photography locations at Waterton Park include:

  • The grand staircase for an elegant, timeless indoor shot.
  • The stone bridge leading to Walton Hall — iconic and romantic.
  • The lawn by the lake, with perfect reflections on still days.
  • Woodland paths offering dappled light for soft, romantic portraits.

A Perfect Summer’s Morning

Despite earlier forecasts of rain, Jayne and Paul’s wedding day dawned clear and bright. The early morning sun sparkled across the water, highlighting the honey-coloured stone of Walton Hall.

In the bridal suite, Lauren Hairflair Squires created a flawless, natural look for Jayne’s hair and makeup — perfect for both in-person beauty and high-resolution wedding photography. Her gown from Perfect Daze hung nearby, a vision of timeless elegance.

Across the bridge, Paul prepared with his groomsmen, enjoying the calm before the celebrations began.

The Ceremony

Waterton Park Hotel is unique among Yorkshire wedding venues — Walton Hall sits on its own island, surrounded by a serene lake and reached by a romantic stone bridge. Built in 1767, this Georgian mansion is steeped in history. In 1821, naturalist Charles Waterton transformed the estate into the world’s first known nature reserve, and the peaceful, protected setting remains to this day.

Jayne made her entrance down the aisle in the ceremony room in Waterton Park hotel building but you can opt to have the ceremony in Walton Hall which sits on the island across the stone bridge.

Portraits Around the Grounds

Waterton Park is a venue that rewards couples who build time into their schedule for portraits. Jayne and Paul’s day allowed for this perfectly — we strolled along the stone bridge, used the lake for dramatic reflection shots, and explored the gardens for intimate, romantic portraits.

The warm afternoon light wrapped around them, creating that signature luxury wedding photography glow. These images will be as timeless in 30 years as they are today — the hallmark of truly classic wedding photography.

The Wedding Breakfast & Evening Celebrations

The reception room, styled by Custy Covers, was a masterclass in elegant décor. Crisp linens, perfectly dressed chairs, and floral arrangements by Polkadot created a refined yet inviting atmosphere.

Speeches were heartfelt, weaving together humour and emotion. From my perspective behind the lens, this was a chance to capture the emotional narrative of the day — the tear in a father’s eye, the groom’s hand resting on his bride’s, the laughter that filled the room.

As the sun dipped lower, the energy shifted. Wedding Venue Lighting transformed the space for the evening party, complete with a photobooth and dance floor. Guests were entertained by caricaturist Yanthia, whose personalised drawings became treasured keepsakes.
